How Staying Active at 50 and Beyond Will Increase Your Quality of Life.

Staying active in your 50’s and beyond can be the best gift you can give to yourself.

“Exercise can enhance your energy levels, keep you at a healthy weight, and even possibly reduce some of the symptoms associated with ageing.”

Quoted from www.seniors.com.au

Statistics show that poor bone health affects over 6.3 million Australians. This can lead to bone fractures which in turn can cause chronic pain, disability or loss of independence. It is really important to take some action daily to build and maintain strength in your bones.

It has also been found that exercise alleviates symptoms such as low self-esteem, reduces depressive moods and relieves anxiety.

Low impact movement, ideally for a little over 21 minutes per day, a total of 150 minutes per week, is going to benefit both your mind and your body. Lucky for you, Luce Fit, our all female gym in Geelong, offers fun group fitness classes for women aged over 50 to help you hit this goal.

Let me explain how you can increase your quality of life through something as simple as movement. There are many ways to exercise to help you stay fit and healthy, so make sure you try out some of these different styles of exercise and find out how you like to move your body.

STRENGTH TRAINING
Strength or weight training keeps your muscles ready for action. It will help make things such as carrying groceries and climbing stairs a lot easier. Flexibility exercises help you to stay limber so you can have a full range of movement and avoid injury.

DANCING
Dance helps your cardiovascular system, improves your endurance, strengthens your muscles, and improves your balance! It also can release natural endorphins adding that spring to your step and helping with self confidence.

YOGA
Yoga can help lower your heart rate and blood pressure and relieve anxiety and depression. Yoga also assists with stretching and strengthening your muscles.

BALANCE
Balance training becomes important after age 50, to help prevent falls and stay active. At any age a fall may be unavoidable, but if your muscles and bones are strong there is less likelihood of a serious debilitating injury.

PILATES
Pilates can help improve your flexibility – by gently stretching your muscles, you increase flexibility in your joints, tendons and ligaments. This may help you move more easily and without less or no pain.  Pilates can also help lower blood pressure and help you improve your blood circulation.

So as you can see, exercise in many forms can help stop, delay, and sometimes improve serious illnesses including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis and osteoporosis. Exercise also has the benefit of helping your brain stay sharp and keeps you from perhaps drifting into a sedative state.

Here at Lucefit we plan to run a range of these types of classes to get you stronger and fitter and keep you coming back for more.

If you haven’t exercised for a while we will help you to ease into a new routine in your life. If you are already a motivated exercising person we will encourage you and keep you interested with various options of movement and strengthening to make you even better prepared to enjoy everything life has to offer.

Personally, I have entered my 40’s and I believe my exercise routines enable me to fully enjoy the pleasures of playing with my children and having adventures with our family. I also do regular Yoga Classes and this helps me to relax whilst also assisting with my strength, flexibility and mobility. Yoga is a wonderful relaxation technique and can help relieve stress and anxiety in this fast moving life we lead.

We would love to see you come along and try our MOVERS class at Lucefit Australia! This class is dedicated to women over 50. We want to help you get motivated and stay accountable in this time of your life so you can live the best you can!
